More than two thousand inscriptions<\/strong> have been discovered in Ephesus, either by chance or during excavations. From these inscriptions, we have learned about the People’s Assembly<\/strong>, Senate decisions<\/strong>, appraisals and punishments, and decrees of emperors and kings.<\/p>

Where Is the Inscription Gallery in Ephesus?<\/h2>

The inscriptions relating to the history of Ephesus<\/a> are displayed in the substructure at the eastern end of the terrace of the Domitian Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Displayed in the Gallery<\/h2>

Only some of the exemplary inscriptions are displayed according to subject and chronology. The texts and their interpretations have been translated and displayed next to the inscriptions. The oldest inscriptions discovered in Ephesus are dated to the 7th century B.C.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archaic and Classical Inscriptions (Nos. 1–11)<\/h2>

The preserved sections of these inscriptions are displayed as nos. 1 and 2<\/strong>. They do not indicate the theme or the purpose of the text. As in all the inscriptions of the Archaic period<\/strong>, the position of the letters in each line was in register with the previous line, and words were separated from each other by a period.<\/p>

A death penalty for a religious crime<\/div>

In the inscription numbered 4<\/strong>, the death penalty requested for a religious crime is described. In the text, the Proegors<\/strong> (the state attorneys) state the names of forty-four or forty-six people<\/strong> who treated a group of ambassadors badly and looted the gifts they were either taking to or had taken from the Temple of Artemis in Sardes<\/strong>, and requested the death penalty<\/strong> for them.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

A wall owned in common4th–3rd c. B.C.<\/span><\/div>

The inscription numbered 11 belongs to the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C.<\/strong> It states, “Up to the roof, this wall is the common property of Moskhion and Eucleides<\/strong>”, and therefore indicates common property law<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A Letter from King Attalos II (No. 13)<\/h2>

An appraisal of an Ephesian tutor155 B.C.<\/span><\/div>

The inscription numbered 13 is an appraisal of an Ephesian tutor serving in the Pergamese Palace. It was written by King Attalos II<\/strong> to the Ephesian People’s and Advisory Assemblies. A tutor named Aristo<\/strong> had educated the future King of Pergamum, Attalos II, and since King Attalos II was quite pleased with the services of Aristo, he declared his pleasure to the Ephesians. The inscription is dated to 155 B.C.<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The text of inscriptions numbered 14-26 honors different people.<\/p>

Titus Flavius Damian, the famous sophistA.D. 166–167<\/span><\/div>

Number 20 states that the famous sophist Titus Flavius Damian<\/strong>, between 166-167 A.D.<\/strong>, donated 22000 medimmes<\/strong> (a measure of grain) to the retreating Roman armies following the Parthian wars, built a new hall in the Varius Baths<\/a>, donated 19,816 denarii<\/strong> of his own money to the city, and therefore was honored by the Trade Guild of the Agora<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

An athlete honored for his victories<\/div>

Number 26<\/strong> states that an Ephesian athlete<\/strong>, whose name cannot be read, was honored for his victories in the thirteen cities of southern Italy, Asia, Greece, and the Islands.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Prytanis and the City’s Cults (No. 27)<\/h2>
No.<\/div>
27<\/div><\/div>
Sacrifices and an expensive duty3rd c. A.D.<\/span><\/div>

In number 27<\/strong>, the decrees about the procedures to be carried out by the Prytanis relating to sacrifices are listed. It is evident from this inscription dated to the 3rd century<\/strong> that Prytanis was a very expensive duty. The prytanis was not only the high priest of Hestia<\/strong>, the goddess of the sacred hearth in the Prytaneion<\/a>, but also in charge of all the cults in the city.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Emperor Hadrian’s Inscription (No. 31)<\/h2>

Hadrian arrives from AthensA.D. 128<\/span><\/div>

Inscription number 31 is about Emperor Hadrian<\/strong>, who came to Ephesus from Athens in 128<\/strong> under the name of Zeus Olympios<\/strong> and states that it is dedicated to the goddess of destiny<\/strong> who rules well. To Zeus Olympios, father of the land, “to Emperor Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus, the savior of the city and its adoptive founder”.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
