But it wasn&#8217;t always called that. It is believed that <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Sirince was founded by Ephesians who abandoned their city during the conquests of&nbsp;<strong>Timur&nbsp;<\/strong>(the king of the <strong>Timurid Empire<\/strong>, a <strong>Turco-Mongol<\/strong><\/span>) and withdrew into the high mountains. But according to another version, the Greek slaves who settled were the founders of the village named <strong>Cirkince <\/strong>(meaning <strong>ugliness<\/strong>). According to another foundation version, <strong>40 <\/strong>freed slaves settled there, and therefore the village was called <strong>Kirkince <\/strong>(from the Turkish word for forty; Kirk). Byzantine frescoes on the walls of S\u00fctini and Kuruda\u011f Caves, and ruins of aqueducts are some of them. Visitors can see them on the road from Selcuk to Sirince. <strong>S\u00fctini Cave<\/strong> was also used as a chapel from the <strong>13th century<\/strong>. The writings found on the walls of the cave are invoked to Jesus and ask for his help. It is stated by a visitor in the <strong>19th <\/strong>century that &#8220;the village consists of at least <strong>300 Greek<\/strong> houses, but the principal language is Turkish. He notes that the women &#8220;dress in the Turkish manner, and the men are all armed as the Turks. He estimated the population as around fifteen hundred people. The <strong>1909 <\/strong>yearbook states that the village had around <strong>1000 <\/strong>houses, all inhabited by Greek Orthodox Christians. Irregular Greek troops controlled the village for <strong>3 <\/strong>years during the <strong>First World War<\/strong> (1919-1922).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-population-exchange-1923\">The Population Exchange (1923)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-\">Until the 1920s, the village was inhabited by Ottoman Greeks. After the Turkish War of Independence, as a result of the <strong>Lausanne Treaty (1923)<\/strong>, a population exchange took place. The Greek population left for Greece, and Turkish families originating from the <strong>Kavala <\/strong>region settled here. Most of the <strong>4,000<\/strong> people settled in Sirince after the population exchange moved to Izmir in search of work and a better life. As a result, the old houses fell into disrepair. In the <strong>1980s<\/strong>, Sirince was discovered by travelers and gradually turned into a tourist center. The road to Sirince had been paved in <strong>1983<\/strong>.
