Also, a new religion, Christianity, was just getting established in <strong>Jerusalem<\/strong>. The apostles who were trying to spread Christianity were expelled from Jerusalem between <strong>37 <\/strong>and <strong>42 A.D<\/strong>.<br><br><strong>St. Paul<\/strong> came to Ephesus in <strong>53 A.D.<\/strong> For three years, first in the synagogues and then everywhere in the city, he preached the gospel and gained followers. He only left Ephesus after a riot started by a silversmith called <strong>Demetrius<\/strong>. According to popular Christian belief, after her resurrection, the Virgin Mary was brought to Ephesus by the beloved apostle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestephesustours.com\/blog\/basilica-of-st-john-ephesus.html\">St. John<\/a>. The theory originated from Jesus\u2019 entrusting the care of his mother to his beloved apostle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-st-paul-s-influence-in-ephesus\">St. Paul\u2019s Influence in Ephesus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>St. Paul<\/strong> is considered the most famous and even the most influential of the early Christian missionaries, together with <strong>St. Pierre<\/strong>. His birthplace and many of the sites he visited on his travels to form the first Christian communities are within the borders of Turkey. He preached the gospel in the synagogue of Ephesus and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestephesustours.com\/blog\/where-did-paul-minister-in-ephesus-tyrannus.html\">hall of Tyrannus<\/a> (the owner of a lecture house).&nbsp;(<strong>Acts of the Apostles 19:9<\/strong>). He made the Ephesians hear the words of Jesus. He did not hesitate to make speeches even while walking from house to house, as he gave his sermons in open spaces beside synagogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-miracles-and-challenges\">Miracles and Challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, he performed many miracles. Handkerchiefs and clothes that touched the body of <strong>St. Paul<\/strong> were taken to those who were sick and those who had evil spirits in them. It was seen that they healed quickly. This miracle made the name of <strong>St. Paul<\/strong> be commemorated with greater respect. Demetrius made a living by selling silver statues of the Mother Goddess Artemis. Realizing that Paul&#8217;s preaching was converting many to <strong>Christianity <\/strong>and threatening his business, Demetrius provoked the local tradesmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-mob-in-the-grand-theatre-of-ephesus\">The Mob in the Grand Theatre of Ephesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The angry tradesmen collected thousands of people together in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestephesustours.com\/blog\/ephesus-amphitheater-grand-theater-of-ephesus.html\" type=\"post\" id=\"697\">Amphitheatre of Ephesus<\/a>. Amid the agitation, the crowd continuously shouted, <em>&#8220;The Great Artemis of Ephesians!&#8221;<\/em> and dragged <strong>St. Paul&#8217;s<\/strong> traveling companions, <strong>Gaios and Aristarchos<\/strong>, into the theatre. <strong>St. Paul<\/strong> bravely wanted to face the crowd to defend his friends, but his disciples and some understanding officials would not let him risk his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-city-clerk-intervenes\">The City Clerk Intervenes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the city clerk (the official in charge of security) arrived and calmed the protesters down. He announced that the courts were open for those who had a formal complaint, successfully dispersing the crowd and preventing further violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-st-paul-s-farewell-in-miletus\">St. Paul&#8217;s Farewell in Miletus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after this dangerous event, and possibly a brief imprisonment, <strong>St. Paul<\/strong> departed for <strong>Macedonia <\/strong>to bring new followers to <strong>Christianity<\/strong>. Later, he traveled to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miletus\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miletus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miletus<\/a>, where he called the elders of the Ephesian community to him. The city was famous for its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestephesustours.com\/blog\/temple-of-artemis-at-ephesus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temple of Artemis<\/a><\/strong> (or Diana). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestephesustours.com\/blog\/history-of-ephesus-ancient-city.html\">Ephesus <\/a>was a center of pilgrimage for believers from all over the Mediterranean world to worship. Emperor Domitian ruled during the time that <strong>John <\/strong>wrote <strong>Revelation<\/strong>. The historian <strong>Eusebius <\/strong>states that the Christians in Ephesus were sorely persecuted, especially during the reign of <strong>Domitian<\/strong>\u2014his reign was characterized by terror\u2014in the latter years. Nevertheless, the message to Ephesians contains the highest praise and the lightest rebuke.
