The Prytaneion in Ephesus Ancient City<\/a> was built in the north of the Ephesus state agora<\/a> and next to the Odeon<\/a> during the last decade<\/strong> of the 1st century BC<\/strong>. Although it is more comprehensive, we can call Prytanion <\/strong>today’s town halls. However, today’s Prytaneion in Ephesus, built during the period of Emperor Augustus<\/strong>, has a plan that became complex for the first time in late antiquity. A forecourt in the form of a triporticus in the Ionic order, which can be completed with 14 columns<\/strong>, measuring 18.40 \u00d7 21.65 m<\/strong>, is reached through the main entrance in the south of the building. In the middle of the courtyard, there is a foundation that has served as the pedestal for the Great Artemis Statue<\/strong> since the Trajan period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n \ud83d\udd25<\/span> Fascinating Fact: The Eternal Flame of Hestia\n <\/h3>\n

\n At the center of the Prytaneion burned the sacred fire of Hestia<\/strong> (goddess of the hearth). It was the duty of the city’s highest-ranking priests, the Curetes<\/em>, to ensure this flame never<\/strong> went out. In ancient times, allowing the city’s eternal fire to die was considered a terrible omen that would bring disaster and ruin upon Ephesus.\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The eternal flame was here in the middle of the ceremonial hall; the red color on the floor determined the location of the flame. Towards the back was a large space with a wooden roof; the base of an altar can still be seen today. Beyond these columns was a courtyard surrounded by a portico. In the north, there is the center of the building, the ceremonial hall, and the side rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Double columns at the corners of the hall lifted the wooden roof. During the excavations<\/a>, archaeologists found 2<\/strong> statues of Artemis (The Great Artemis<\/strong> and Beautiful Artemis<\/strong>), now exhibited in the Ephesus Archaeology Museum<\/a>.
