Planning Your Visit to Ephesus

The order of the sights you will visit is essential when planning your Ephesus tour. Suppose your time is minimal and you only want to see the most important places in and around Ephesus. In that case, you can visit in order of the House of the Virgin Mary, Ephesus Ancient City, and the Temple of Artemis optionally. These are the must-see sights of the Selcuk historical area (Ephesus). The reason why we visit the Virgin Mary’s House first is that the ancient city of Ephesus is already on our way back, so we will save some time. However, we may need to change our visit order according to some conditions which will be discussed further in the following sections of this article.

Exploring Ephesus Ancient City: Must-See Highlights

Ephesus Ancient City features two accessible entrance gates. Ephesus Tour vehicles typically deposit guests at the upper gate, then move on to park at the lower gate. However, for those embarking on a self-guided tour, starting and finishing your Ephesus tour at the lower gate is advisable.

Starting at the upper gate and looping back to it would be quite tiring and would consume your limited sightseeing time. The reason why you start and finish your tour at the lower gate is that the most featured structures in the Ancient City of Ephesus are close to the lower gate. In this way, it is possible to see all the important structures in Ephesus in just 45 minutes – 1 hour according to your interest and time limit. If you have more time, we recommend the route we use on our own tours: our van drops you at the upper gate and waits for you at the lower gate, so you walk downhill the whole way and see the whole city in about 1.5–2 hours. You can preview it on our animated Ephesus walking route.

the temple of artemis at ephesus

The Temple of Artemis

Although there is nothing much to see more than a few pillar pieces and marble fragments today, you might consider paying a visit to the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, especially as it falls conveniently on your path. The Temple of Artemis is free of charge and will only take a few minutes to visit.

Short on Time? What to Skip First

When a guest’s time gets tight, for example because the ship arrives late or leaves early, this is the order in which we drop stops:

  4. ✓Ephesus Ancient CityThe one stop you should never skip.
