The Theatre Gymnasium in Ephesus is situated to the north of the square where Harbour street and Marble Road intersect each other. It’s the biggest gymnasium in the city. The excavation of only the palaestra (training school for physical exercises) of the gymnasium has been completed. The palaestra, built facing Harbour Street, measures 70 by 30 meters and is surrounded on three sides by a columned portico.
On its fourth side, there are steps which were isude as viewing stands during the practice sessions of various sports. The entrance to the main building of the Theatre Gymnasium from the palaestra was located here also.
The main building was built in an east-west direction, on a symmetrical floor plan. The baths, including the frigidarium, tepidarium, caldarium, and the other sections, are located at the southern end, adjacent to the palaestra. The classrooms were located at the sides. The five rooms in the north served as the library and conference rooms, and the one in the middle with an apsidal wall was the Imperial Hall of the gymnasium.
