Next to the Octagon in Ephesus, there is a row of Greek and Latin inscriptions that state the decrees of emperors Valentinian I, Valens, and Gratianus, pertaining to the restoration of the Ephesus City and the city wall, following the disastrous earthquake around the middle of the 4th century, and holidays in the Asian province. Another mausoleum shaped like a horseshoe is seen after these inscriptions. Since The Byzantine Fountain was built on it in the 5th century, the tomb has partially collapsed.
The Byzantine fountain in Ephesus consists of a pool in the front and the main building behind the pool. The walls of the fountain are decorated with signs of the Cross.
